Product Review: YSL Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils

YSL Mascara Product Review

I’ll admit it, I’m a mascara fiend. But unlike other mascara connoisseurs who don’t mind shelling out the big bucks for “quality” mascara, I usually settle with a $6 CoverGirl from the drug store. But when designer mascara finds its way to me at no cost, I certainly won’t object!

Recently, I’ve put a pause on my CoverGirl mascara routine to try out the new and improved YSL Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils ($32).

YSL Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils

According to its website, the new and improved YSL mascara formula doesn’t ever dry out, which is typically my main gripe with buying expensive beauty products. Another thing that excited me was that the new mascara promises to deliver extra volume and dramatic flair. For someone who has very thin and sparse lashes (whoo Asian genes), volume is so important. So did the YSL mascara deliver? Drum roll please…

First off, as weird as it sounds, the YSL Volume Effect smells really good, unlike some cheaper alternatives. Second of all, I have a long history with smudged eye makeup and this mascara didn’t smudge at all. Not even after my gym sesh with the personal trainer, which is fairly impressive.

The mascara did add some volume to my sad lashes, but I admit I’m still a little keptical on whether or not it’s enough for me to pay 6x the price of my usual Lashblast. The good news is, the mascara also gave my lashes some extra length!  The mascara also created a babydoll, eyelash extension look, which I really liked. The “dramatic effect” was definitely noticeable – I even had a co-worker ask if I was wearing falsies!

Overall, I think it’s a good mascara for anyone looking to create a natural lush lash look. Personally, I wouldn’t invest in it on the reg (we’ll see how long the tube lasts!), but if I was feeling splurgy, I would definitely pick this as my new go-to.
