DIY Makeup Brush Holder

Ever since getting settled in the new place, I’ve been constantly trying find new ways to organize my things. I needed to get creative with smaller spaces, like the bathroom counter. In the past, I’ve always had mirror closets in my room so I could store all of my makeup on the dresser. But now in a mirror-less room, I store my makeup in the bathroom. While it’s no big deal for me to go through my makeup bags (since everything’s separated by day-to-day to going out), it was a constant struggle to dig up the right kind of brushes that I needed.

So I took to Pinterest for some ideas. As a huge mason jar fanatic, I came across this DIY mason jar makeup brush holder and fell in love. Of course I wanted to do my own rustic/shabby chic take on it, so I came up with this:

Here’s what you need:

Let’s get started!

makeup brush steps

  1. First, I applied a generous amount of Mod Podge all over the jar. If you’re not familiar with Mod Podge, it’s all-in-one glue, sealer and finish. Since Mod Podge dries clear, you don’t have to worry about using too much! I went with the gloss finish because that’s what I had on hand but you can really use any kind of Mod Podge you’d like. (I also read that spray adhesive works well for this project if you wanted to make your life easier.)

  2. Stretch the lace fabric to cover the mason jar as little or as much as you want. I doubled up a little bit since my lace ribbon was a little sheer and I wanted a fuller look. (Also for the end product, I decided I overdid it with the lace and trimmed some off the top and bottom.) Once I got the jar covered, I went over the entire jar, lace and all, with another thin coat of Mod Podge for security.

  3. Once the laced jar dried, I took to the burlap ribbon and trimmed it to fit the circumference of the jar. Again, I wanted a fuller look so I did two rows of the ribbon since it was thin. Instead of Mod Podge, however, I used a hot glue gun to secure the burlap.

  4. Lastly, I added the flower accent onto the burlap with the hot glue gun and filled the jar with clear marbles.

Voila! I am loving the fact that I can now easily see and access all of my makeup brushes. Plus the jar fits perfectly with the rest of my bathroom decor, don’t you think?
